As announced long ago, climate activists on Wednesday occupied a lecture hall at the University of Vienna under the title “Erde brennt” – specifically lecture hall C1 in the old AKH. A month ago, the occupation of universities and schools “around the world” was announced for November.
“We call for a radical systemic change to overcome social crises, the education crisis and the climate crisis,” the activists said on Twitter. A meeting with scientists has been announced at 6.30 pm.
According to the activists, the aim of the occupations is to “end the fossil fuel economy”. Normal everyday life in schools and universities will be disrupted, “because we can no longer pretend that normalcy is okay”. It is their duty to fight as young people.
“Continuing the old way is simply not possible anymore”
By occupying the lecture halls, they are demanding more money for universities, the end of fossil fuels and a tax on wealth and excess profits. “Continuing as before is simply no longer possible, neither in the university, nor in the social sector, nor in climate policy,” said Amina Guggenbichler of “Erde brennt Wien” in a statement.
In October, the activists already hung a banner with the slogan “The earth is on fire – occupy the university” on the main building of the University of Vienna. Similar campaigns took place on the campus of the Vienna University of Applied Sciences.
