The EU Commission is satisfied with the progress of joint gas purchases. The second call for applications is scheduled for 26 June. Interested parties can then submit their request for gas supplies for the period August 2023 to March 2025.
This should meet the purchasing behavior of energy-intensive industries that purchase gas for a longer period of time. Gas sellers can connect with EU buyers through a common platform. “We have learned lessons from the first round and made improvements to further facilitate industry participation and increase the efficiency of joint procurement,” European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič said on Friday.
In addition, similar projects will be started for other goods such as hydrogen and critical raw materials. EU countries are required to use the common platform for at least 15 percent of their national gas storage targets. This corresponds to approximately 13.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The targets were agreed in 2022 as a result of the war between Russia and Ukraine. This has a negative effect on the energy supply. The joint procurement and gas storage targets are intended, among other things, to secure energy supplies and to leverage Europe’s combined market weight.
exceeded expectations
In the first tender round, there was a demand for 11.7 cubic meters of gas and the offers also exceeded expectations at 18.7 cubic meters. The negotiations between the companies must then take place outside the platform. That is why the Vice-President of the EU Commission could not comment on specific contracts and companies involved on Friday.
