A severely disabled 30-year-old is currently unable to participate in outings in his group home for safety reasons due to epileptic seizures. He needs special transportation, but cannot afford it. This allowed him to be driven in a wheelchair.
Life has not always been kind to Martin (30) from the Mühlviertel. Due to a lack of oxygen at birth, he suffers from cerebral palsy (brain damage), which greatly affects his daily life. He cannot speak, is spastic and has repeated extremely painful epileptic seizures.
As a result of his serious illness, Martin cannot move independently. His range of motion is extremely limited. He is in a wheelchair, but has no control over it and cannot roll with it.
He needs outside help for almost all activities and maneuvers. But Martin enjoys being among people and laughs a lot.
He has lived in a supported housing building with five other disabled people for eight years. From Monday to Friday he also likes to stay in a workshop for the disabled, where he cannot work, but he is offered massages that relax him. That’s why he also likes smaller visits to the thermal baths, where he fully enjoys the warmth of the water.
Conducive to development
Martin also finds relaxation in the garden and in the fresh air. Excursions in nature would be very useful for him – they would provide him with new sensory impressions.
While his housemates ride on electric tandems driven by caregivers, Martin is denied this pleasure. Because of his attacks, that would just be too dangerous. The 30-year-old therefore needs a special electric bicycle into which his wheelchair can also be integrated. Costs: 7000 euros.
