The Czech parliament has labeled the current regime in Russia as “terrorist” and has strongly condemned Russia’s recent attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. In addition, the lower house states in a resolution passed in Prague on Tuesday evening that it does not recognize the mock referendums recently held on the annexation of four Ukrainian regions to Russia.
“The Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, in accordance with the resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, labels the current Russian regime as terrorist,” the resolution reads. The attacks on civilians and energy infrastructure are a “clear attempt to achieve political goals by intimidating people and correspond to terrorist methods”.
Investigation of crimes against humanity
129 of the 156 MPs present in the 200-seat House of Representatives voted in favor of the resolution. Only 14 members of Tomio Okamura’s opposition right-wing extremist Direct Democracy Party (SPD) voted against.
Parliament also supported efforts by Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky to establish a special tribunal to try crimes related to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and an International Criminal Court-led investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity.
