The government of the British Channel Island of Jersey has frozen assets worth seven billion US dollars (6.45 billion euros) from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. The royal court in the capital Saint Helier issued a corresponding order, the local judicial authority announced on Wednesday. The multi-billionaire is considered one of Jersey’s wealthiest residents. He had previously been sanctioned by the EU and Britain.
The decision affects assets related to the previous owner of London football club Chelsea FC, which is either based in the Channel Island or owned by Jersey-based companies. In addition, several buildings were searched.
Abramovich recently attended the Russian-Ukrainian peace talks in Istanbul. Shortly after the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, he announced that he wanted to sell Champions League winner Chelsea. The preferred bidder for the football club will be announced on Easter Monday.
Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom, but as a so-called crown estate it is directly subordinate to the British royal family. The island decides independently on legal matters. London is solely responsible for foreign and defense policy.
