How mega-satellites should replace the mobile phone mast

Date:

Worldwide accessibility without blind spots and expensive roaming: that is an old dream of every mobile phone user. However, due to the high cost and low bandwidth, satellite phones have so far been a niche phenomenon, with regular mobile phones relying on the national networks. A gigantic communication satellite wants to change that: BlueWalker 3 transmits broadband internet directly from orbit around the smartphone.

September 10 at the US spaceport Cape Canaveral: A Falcon 9 rocket from the technology magnate Elon Musk lifts off with a deafening noise. The payload capsule not only contains a stack of Starlink satellites for Musk’s own project, which are received via a satellite dish on Earth. The rocket will also launch BlueWalker 3 into orbit – the civilian communications satellite with the largest antenna yet. A few weeks later, the 64 square meter construction of antennas and solar panels is now fully unfolded. It is one of the brightest celestial objects in the night sky.
