In the House of Representatives – Pelosi relinquishes leadership of the US Democrats

Date:

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi relinquishes leadership of the Democratic Party in the Congressional Chamber following the midterm elections. In an emotional speech in the House of Representatives on Thursday, the 82-year-old said she would not run for re-election to a Democratic leadership position in Congress. But she remains a Member of Parliament.

Earlier, the Democrats of US President Joe Biden had lost their majority in the House of Representatives in the congressional elections. Republicans get more than half of the 435 seats in the Congressional Chamber.

Pelosi, 82, of California, has represented a San Francisco electoral district in Washington since 1987. First, Pelosi served as Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011, making her the most powerful woman in U.S. history until Kamala Harris became Vice President in 2021. In 2019, she again became Speaker of the House of Representatives and thus the central political opponent of Republican President Donald Trump. Pelosi was then elected to another two-year term in November 2021.

Democrats retain majority in Senate
The Democrats retain control in the important Senate. With a divided Congress, governing for Biden will certainly become more difficult over the next two years. In addition, Republicans can investigate Biden and his policies.

After the midterm elections, the Republicans nominated their party leader Kevin McCarthy as the future Speaker of the House of Representatives. McCarthy received the support of his group on Tuesday to run for the powerful post as president of the U.S. House of Representatives, succeeding Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi has also attracted attention outside the United States. A visit to Taiwan by allies of President Joe Biden in early August sparked clear irritation in China. A man recently broke into her home and seriously injured her 82-year-old husband. Politically, Pelosi has been under pressure lately to pave the way for younger party members. Hakeem Jeffries, 52, could start this generation change. He would also be the first African American to lead a party in the House of Representatives. “For me, it’s time for a new generation to lead the Democratic faction that I respect so much,” Pelosi said Thursday.
