Several holiday resorts in Croatia are under water. Parts of Novi Vinodolski, Malinska, Crikvenica and the island of Krk have been affected. One mayor even said he couldn’t remember a similarly strong storm in this region.
The storm raged from Thursday night through Friday morning. “It has never been worse. The water level is at an all-time high and the damage is massive,” Mayor Tomislav Cvitković of Novi Vinodolski told the Croatian online portal Večernji list. According to a report from “Today”, there is up to 270 liters of rainwater per square meter. Roads were blocked, cars and buses got stuck in the water, according to the “Kleine Zeitung”. Parking lots around the shopping centers, numerous residential buildings and cellars were flooded. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries so far.
The local emergency services were constantly on call. According to the mayor of the little more than 5,000 inhabitants, there were already showers of up to 220 liters per square meter last year. “(…)Now we are at 270. I can’t remember any comparable strong storm in this region. “According to “Today” in Croatia, when there are heavy downpours, the water accumulates in such a way that a flood of rain pours through the villages. That would start a chain reaction that would lead to damage in several places.
65 missions in Malinska
Also affected by the storms are the island of Krk, which was hit by a thunderstorm, and the areas around Malinska and Dobrinje. A fire chief spoke of 65 operations in the two areas, as reported by the “Kleine Zeitung” in Carinthia.
Situation calms down, but severe weather warning
According to the emergency services, the situation should have calmed down by Friday afternoon. However, the state weather service DHMZ warns of further storms on Saturday. Flooding of property and the transport network is possible. It is also conceivable that the energy supply, the communication network and the water supply will be interrupted. Residents should be careful when driving and prepare to protect themselves and their property, it said.
The affected places are near the Adriatic coast in the north of the country. The ZAMG reports the storms, especially for Saturday afternoon, with a wind speed of 17 kilometers per hour. The temperatures should be between 3 and 8 degrees Celsius.
