Avian flu has been found in a water bird at the Berlin Zoo. The hammerhead shark died on Nov. 13, the zoo said Friday. The virus had already been confirmed in the laboratory. Almost all birds, including penguins, were placed in back aviaries and stables.
“In consultation with local authorities, Zoo Berlin will be closed to guests with immediate effect as a precaution,” it says.
“Fortunately, no other animal shows the corresponding symptoms of the disease,” says the zoological director of the Berlin Zoo and Tierpark Christian Kern. They would still be tested for the virus.
A precautionary closure of the entire zoo grounds is an important step in this situation until you have a better overview of the situation, the Senate Consumer Protection Service said. The primary goal is to prevent the virus from spreading.
