In the former civil war region of Northern Ireland, unknown persons attacked a police patrol with an explosive device in the town of Strabane. The two officers survived the bombing unharmed. It was a targeted attack, the executive is investigating attempted murder. The vehicle of the two officers was damaged in the attack late in the evening.
Strabane is located directly on the border with neighboring Ireland.
The area has been cordoned off for investigation. About 1000 inhabitants have been affected, children could not go to school. Politicians from all religious camps condemned the murder.
In Northern Ireland, Catholics – most of whom want reunification with Ireland – and Protestants – mostly in favor of union with Britain – had been fighting for decades. In Strabane, with a population of over 13,000, where almost exclusively Catholics live, there were particularly many attacks on British soldiers and police officers. The British army had a base near the town for a long time. Recently, warnings of new attacks had increased again. Politically paralyzed by the dispute over the special Brexit rules, Northern Ireland currently has neither a government nor a functioning parliament.
