Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has complained that his prison conditions have tightened considerably. He had been transferred to a cramped isolation cell and was no longer allowed to receive visits from relatives, Navalny said in a message his support team shared online networks. In this cell, which is intended for detainees with bad behavior, he is only allowed two books.
Four days before a scheduled visit, he was informed that he would be transferred to this cell. Now he has not seen his parents, his wife and his children for several months. “You can congratulate me!” Said sarcastically in Navalny’s message. “You’re doing this to silence me. That means my first commitment is which one? Right! Don’t be afraid and don’t be silent.”
Nearly died of poison attack
Navalny, 46, is one of Russia’s strongest critics of President Vladimir Putin. He was sentenced in March to nine years in prison under stricter conditions on charges he described as politically motivated. In January 2021, he was arrested in Russia upon his return from Germany. In Germany, he recovered from a poison attack that nearly killed him and for which he blames the Kremlin.
Since his arrest, Navalny has been broadcasting messages to the public through his support team. In the summer he reported that he had been transferred to a disciplinary cell in his penal colony near the city of Vladimir, about 200 kilometers east of Moscow.
