In the spring it was already announced that a new “Mah-Schafe” would be set up on Vienna’s Danube Island. After the contract with the Kulturhaus WUK expired, the city of Vienna put the grazing out to tender again and a provider from the Mostviertel was awarded the contract. Now even the whole project “WUK bio.schafe” is coming to an end – places are urgently needed for the animals.
It must be recognized that “a responsible continuation of the project under free market conditions and without corresponding public contracts is not possible”, the WUK said on its website. That is why they are looking for a new home for the Carniolan sheep, there are still about 80 animals to be found, as soon as a suitable place has been found for all, the project will be closed.
care for the long-term unemployed
The sheep not only carried out sustainable and climate-friendly landscape management on the Danube Island, but also in the March-Thaya region and in Marchfeld. The animals were cared for by previously long-term unemployed people.
“We regret that we have to take this step for economic reasons. However, we are convinced that we were and are a driving force with the project and that natural grazing with sheep will play an increasingly important role,” writes the WUK. Anyone who wants to give the former “Donauinselschafen” and their herd mates a new home , can contact bioschafe@wuk.at or 0699 14012195. Slaughter free places are preferred…
