January to October – Already more asylum applications than in 2015

Date:

Almost tripled compared to last year and already more than in the year of the major migration movements in 2015: We are talking about asylum applications. In the first ten months of this year, 89,867 applications were submitted in Austria. However: compared to 2015, there are far fewer people in primary care…

That the number of asylum applications is rising sharply has been clear for some time – and is now also apparent from the current monthly figures of the Ministry of the Interior. The number of asylum applications this year already exceeds the total number from the year of the large migration movements in 2015, when 88,340 applications were submitted. It should be noted that there are relatively fewer people in primary care this year. This suggests that after they have applied for asylum and been apprehended by the police, they travel on to the actual destination countries, such as France, Italy and Great Britain. In 2021, nearly 40,000 applications were submitted during the year.

17,602 positive reports this year
From January to the end of October, 59,908 applications were rejected (the decision was ultimately negative), but that does not mean that the applicants were not given another residence permit. Because the granting of subsidiary protection also falls under the category of rejected applications. In the same period, 17,602 protections were granted (asylum, subsidiary protection or humanitarian residence permits). Another 27,597 people who had applied in the past evaded the procedure, ie left Austria voluntarily during these ten months.

Who applied for asylum most often?
Afghans (4123) submitted the most asylum applications in October, followed by Indians (3479), Syrians (3424) and Tunisians (2462). The Ministry of the Interior emphasized that asylum applications from migrants from India and Tunisia are de facto without a chance: this year there were only five grants of protection for Tunisians. If you compare it with last year, the difference between Indians and Tunisians is striking. Because in the whole of 2021, only 949 applications were submitted by Indians and 527 by Tunisians.

In principle, people displaced from Ukraine due to the war are not included in the asylum statistics. They fall under the EU “Temporary Protection” directive. At the end of October, about 91,500 people were in basic care, about 56,500 of whom had been displaced from Ukraine by the war, according to the Interior Ministry.

Most have “practically no chance of asylum”
As last month, the Interior Ministry pointed out that a large proportion of the applications were submitted by migrants “who have entered the country illegally for economic reasons and therefore have virtually no chance of asylum”. About 40 percent of irregular migrants enter Serbia without a visa and are brought to the EU by smugglers.

Serbia aligns visa rules with EU
Here, Serbia has announced that it will align its visa rules with those of the EU. Tunisians have required a visa for Serbia since Sunday, according to the BMI. Other countries such as India will follow by the end of the year, reference was made to an agreement between Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) and the heads of government of Serbia and Hungary, Aleksandar Vucic and Victor Orban, on October 3 in Budapest.

The FPÖ saw their warnings confirmed on Sunday given the figures. “As we have been drumming for months: Austria needs an immediate asylum freeze,” FPÖ security spokesman Hannes Amesbauer said in a broadcast. “Borders to illegal immigrants must finally be closed, refusals legalized and a massive deportation offensive launched – the boat is more than full,” he said.
