Kiev has denied reports of alleged executions of Russian prisoners of war by Ukrainian soldiers. On the contrary, Ukrainian troops defended themselves against Russian soldiers, who only pretended to surrender, Ukrainian parliament human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets told Telegram on Sunday.
This week, videos surfaced on Russian online networks allegedly showing the execution of about a dozen Russian soldiers by Ukrainian forces after their surrender.
Recordings could not be independently verified
Video shows soldiers seemingly surrendering and lying face down on the ground in a backyard. Shortly after, shots are heard and the video abruptly ends. Another video shows about a dozen bodies in pools of blood. The recordings could not be independently verified by AFP news agency.
Russia demands investigation into ‘war crimes’
The Russian Defense Ministry had called for an investigation into “war crimes” after the videos became known. The footage showed the “premeditated and methodical murder” of more than 10 Russian soldiers, the ministry said on Friday.
Lubinets said “clips” from a video showed Russian soldiers using a “fake surrender” to “open fire on Ukrainian troops”. This is a “war crime”.
UN spokesman: Videos under investigation
A UN spokesman told AFP the UN was “aware of the videos” and was “investigating them”. The UN human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine recently said it had credible reports of torture and ill-treatment of prisoners of war on both sides.
