After pressure from Vienna – asylum: Serbia ends visa freedom for Tunisians

Date:

Until now, people from Tunisia are visa-free in Serbia, so they can travel almost to the external border of the EU without any problems. But that’s the end. After pressure from Austria, Serbia lifted the visa exemption on Sunday.

In October, exactly 89,867 people applied for asylum in Austria – more than in the year of the great migration movement in 2015.

About 13 percent of this comes from Tunisia and 17 percent from India. Both groups de facto have no chance of a positive decision. In the current year, for example, only five Tunisians have received protection.

Tunisians: The route in the EU runs via Istanbul to Belgrade
However, they hardly play a role in basic care. Because the majority of people from the North African country travel on – to Italy, France or Spain, where they join an already established community.

The route to the EU takes them via Istanbul to Belgrade, where they often end up in the hands of the international smuggling mafia. Until now, people from Tunisia are visa-free in Serbia, so they can travel almost to the external border of the EU without any problems. But that’s over — Serbia lifted visa freedom on Sunday.

Asylum crisis: Schengen “functionless” for Karner
Austria is also on the brakes on another political stage. As reported, a possible expansion of the Schengen area was clearly rejected. Accordingly, Austria will refuse to admit Romania and Bulgaria. According to well-informed circles, gangs of people smugglers operate from there. Given the current pressure from the smuggling mafia and illegal migration in general, extending Schengen would be a “premature absurdity”. “If a system doesn’t work, it can’t be made any bigger,” Interior Secretary Gerhard Karner said.
