Trial in Graz: – Steirer (19) stole the fire engine for a trip

Date:

A young Styrian stole clothing from the volunteer fire brigade and made several trips in the fire truck. He can’t explain why. According to his lawyer, he suffers from severe depression. The court in Graz imposes a mild sentence: 100 hours of community service. The unemployed waiter gratefully accepted.

An unusual case was heard on Monday at the Graz Criminal Court. A 19-year-old Styrian is said to have been on the road repeatedly with a fire truck. But not because he’s a firefighter. No, he just used the car of the volunteer fire brigade without permission! With a chip he allegedly stole.

‘They went for a 30-kilometer walk’
“We can’t undo what happened,” said Judge Raimund Frei. “But what interests me is why you did it. Are you so enthusiastic about the fire brigade?” – “Yes, I am really excited.” – “But did you think no one would find out if you drove around town with that big machine? You walked 30 kilometers last time. What if there really had been an assignment? Imagine that the fire brigade wants to leave and then there is no car”, the judge shakes his head.

‘Social hours – but please not at the fire department’
The young defendant cannot really answer that. And he not only stole the car several times, but also clothing: the OM lists a combat jacket, combat trousers, boots, a fire helmet, a hood and a bad luck triangle. His lawyer talks about the 19-year-old’s serious depression, who is now being treated by a psychiatrist.

“I don’t want to drill any further,” Frei concludes. “You lost your driver’s license and then your job as a result of the incident. That is part of some kind of punishment anyway.” The waiter is eventually sentenced to 100 hours of community service – “maybe just not with the fire brigade. That wouldn’t be so smart”, the judge laughs.
