Anelia Spasova is a service and control employee at ÖBB. The “Krone” spoke to her about her passion for her job, career opportunities and dealing with difficult passengers.
„Crown“: What exactly do you do in your job?
As a train service employee, I sit on the train, check tickets and help our travelers if they have questions, for example about connecting connections.
How did you come to apply for a job at ÖBB?
I graduated from a tourism school, so I’ve always been interested in a job with a lot of customer contact. I had no idea that I would eventually get on the train. But then I became aware of the job in 2021 and decided to do it. Today I don’t want to do anything else.
What do you like most about your job?
I am happy to work in such a great team. The three of us are always on the train, which makes the work even more fun. We can also count on each other in difficult situations.
Keyword: Difficult passengers! How often do you find yourself in difficult situations?
Of course there are always situations that challenge me. Many people have become more impatient and sometimes aggressive in recent years. But me and my colleagues have it under control and can quickly de-escalate many situations because we approach people. We also work closely with the police, who are always quick to assist us when needed.
How can you get started in your work, what requirements do you need?
You must be 18 years old and have a good knowledge of German and English to answer traveler questions. In the two-month training to become a service and control employee or train conductor, you will learn everything you need to know specifically for the position. It is also important that you have good communication skills and have good nerves in stressful situations.
What is the difference?
As a train conductor you have even more responsibility. Before departure you check whether everything in the train meets the safety regulations, you test the brakes and you send the train into operation. After a few months in the service and control team, you can train internally to become a train conductor. That is my big goal for 2023.
