In Italy, there is a lot of excitement about a bill that would support marriages with 20,000 euros. For example, there is disagreement about why only church marriages should be registered.
A bill introduced in parliament by several members of the right-wing populist Lega is causing quite a stir in Italy: the law provides for bonus payments of up to 20,000 euros for couples who marry in church.
Under the proposal, the state would have to provide a 20 percent expense allowance for the wedding — up to a maximum of $20,000. This can be used to pay for, for example, the flower decorations in the church and the clothing for the bridal couple, but also the catering, the wedding gifts, the hairdresser and even the bride’s make-up and any photo shoots. According to the initiators, they want to revive the number of marriages, which have been declining for years.
Lega wants attention
Matteo Salvini’s Lega clearly wants to attract attention with its bill. The party is struggling to be a junior partner in the new government, having lost half of its previous votes in the most recent election and now holding just 8 percent.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni explained that the proposal was not a government decision. The opposition said Italy is a secular state and cannot only encourage church marriages.
