Devastating fire – factory in central China in flames: 38 dead

Date:

A devastating fire at a factory in central China has killed 38 people. As the state news agency Xinhua reported on Tuesday, the fire broke out in Anyang city in Henan province on Monday and was extinguished by evening.

Initially 36 dead and two missing were mentioned. It was later said that 38 people had been killed. According to media reports, chemicals were stored at the facility. However, there is no official information about the cause of the fire.

Two people were taken to hospital with minor injuries, the report said. More than 200 rescuers and 60 firefighters were deployed. It was also unclear what kind of factory it was.

The disaster brings back memories of a similar fire in October 2007, when a fire at an illegal shoe factory in Hushi Village, Fujian province in southeastern China, killed at least 37 people. Many other workers were injured. At that time, barred windows became a death trap for many. The police later arrested the owner of the factory.

The number of casualties was even higher in 2015, when a series of massive explosions at a dangerous goods warehouse in the port city of Tianjin killed 173 people, many of them firefighters. Eleven people died in a factory fire in Henan in 2018.

Fires and industrial accidents occur again and again in China, which can be traced back to negligence and non-compliance with safety regulations.
