Drones are playing an increasingly important role in armed conflicts, but are usually piloted manually or fly pre-programmed routes. The Israeli arms company Elbit Systems wants to change that and has unveiled a small kamikaze drone that, thanks to AI image recognition, can navigate autonomously within buildings and attack targets at the touch of a button. But the system called Lanius, equipped with a lurking mode, raises ethical questions.
Soldiers sneak into the target area accompanied by a drone “mothership”: Elbit Systems has already published a commercial for its AI kamikaze drone for urban areas and presents the capabilities of the Lanius system in more detail. The special feature is the high degree of autonomy: the three mini-drones, which depart from the “mother ship”, fly into buildings through open windows or doors and find their way there like a swarm. Their goal is ambush attacks.
