The arrival of new migrants to the UK marks a record high

Date:

Student visas and refugees from Ukraine and Hong Kong brought the number to half a million people

The United Kingdom registered the highest number of immigrants on record between June 2021 and 2022. There were 1.1 million and the net migration was almost half, 504,000. Some 170,000 are more than the historical number of 336,000 recorded at the end of March 2015. There were still three months to go before the British people voted for Brexit, partly because of excessive immigration.

Immigration into the Community has declined and the balance for the past year recorded by the National Statistics Office (ONS) gives a negative balance of -51,000, as the difference between those who arrived in the UK and those who left . But the new figures have nothing to do with immigration policy after the march with the European Union.

The huge increase in immigrants is mainly due to student visas. In recent years, UK authorities have pursued a policy of promoting their universities, and the granting of postgraduate visas to allow graduates to stay in the UK for three years has increased its appeal. There were a total of 476,000.

Refugees from Ukraine, 144,600, and from Hong Kong, 144,000, whose British citizenship is recognized, make up significant blocs of the total number. The ONS estimates that 151,000 immigrants arrived on work visas. This is the case for nurses needed in health and emergency services or for private companies looking for employees with specific professional qualifications.

The goal of reducing immigration is maintained. Figures of refugees or economic immigrants crossing the English Channel are insignificant in relation to the overall data, but the agency’s official report highlights the high acceptance rate of refugee status, 98%, for immigrant Afghans, Syrians or Eritreans.

The Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has suggested that the arrival of people close to the students being hosted should be suppressed. His interior minister, Suella Bannerman, has set a goal of reducing immigration to tens of thousands. But employers this week called on the government to open the door to more immigrants at the annual meeting of the Confederation of British Industry.

The answer was also negative by the Leader of the Opposition, Sir Keir Starmer. The Labor Party warned employers not to base their business on low wages and to train the British professionally to fill vacancies. Those present showed their frustration because the training policy is a long-term policy and their need for work is dire.

Immigration has fallen on the scale of UK concerns since 2016, but surveys show the same factors remain. A majority, especially conservative voters, want it slashed. And that idea is much more shared by the over-65s than among other age groups, and much more in the north of England than in London too.

The ONS data for 2021-22 reflects a unique moment. The end of pandemic restrictions has encouraged more students to resume on-site teaching or start courses without a travel ban. War in Ukraine and Crisis in Hong Kong. Statisticians think the net immigration rate will fall next year.
