A fire at a residential building in Urumqi, the capital of northwestern China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, killed 10 people and injured nine others on Thursday.
The fire broke out in the evening, the state news agency Xinhua reports. The flames reportedly spread from the point of origin on the 15th to the 17th floor, with smoke rising to the 21st floor. The fire was extinguished after about three hours.
Fire through power strip?
According to initial investigation, the fire appears to have started in a power strip in a bedroom of one of the 15th-floor apartments. The deaths and injuries were caused by inhalation of toxic fumes. Those injured who have been taken to hospital are no longer in mortal danger, it said.
Deadly fires are common in China due to poor safety standards and corruption among the officials responsible for maintaining them. A factory fire in central China killed 38 people on Monday.
