Expert explains: – Russians changed tactics for large-scale offensive

Date:

Russia has changed its tactics in the major offensive that has already begun in eastern Ukraine. “The Ukrainian positions will only be attacked after massive artillery and multiple rocket launchers. The Russians then advance very slowly, at about 1.5 kilometers per hour,” Colonel Markus Reisner, head of the development department of the Theresian Military Academy, explained on Thursday.

This is currently happening at four points in the potential cauldron that is forming. “Meanwhile, more troops are constantly being brought in, especially from Belgorod. Overall coordination is provided by a new general, Alexander Dwornikov. He has been performing the operation for at least ten days. He previously led the offensive in this area, so he knows the situation in detail.

The result of his leadership was the successful encirclement of Ukrainian forces at Izjum and the breakout of the strait to the south. The Russians won a tank battle between Russian and Ukrainian tanks at Kamina. Despite this, the Ukrainian troops managed to reorganize and form a stable defense line. “This shows the extremely high morale of the Ukrainian armed forces,” Reisner explains.

Ukrainians do not agree
The Ukrainian armed forces, in turn, try to further strengthen their existing defensive positions in the Donbass, for example by continuously laying mines, occupy the positions during artillery attacks with small troops and try to achieve a defensive success only when the Russian ground forces advance. on. This is made more difficult for them by the massive use of drones (type ORLAN-10) by the Russians. In addition, the Russian forces are trying to close off the supply lines of the Ukrainians with the help of air resources (fighter planes, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles).

According to Reisner, selected Western weapon systems such as mini-drones for artillery fire control and anti-tank systems are already in the Donbass or en route, including the US Switchblade 600 Kamikaze drones. The heavy weapon systems promised by the West have not yet arrived. “Your timely arrival is currently not expected on time.”

Strike against the Russians successful
Reisner sees the heavy damage to the Russian flagship Moskva as a great success for Ukraine. The Russian Black Sea Fleet ship was hit by at least two Ukrainian RK-360MC NEPTUN anti-ship missiles and badly damaged, if not sunk. “This success in Ukraine has a very high symbolic effect, if only because of the name.”

Bitter City Fighting in Mariupol
As for the situation in Mariupol, the city is largely in Russian hands. “Within the city, essentially two districts are still under Ukrainian control. Here a bitter house war rages above and below the streets. The Ukrainian defenders are fighting from the underground ducts and corridors, especially in the Azovtal industrial factory. However, the battle for the city is in its final stages,” said Reisner. Repeated Ukrainian breakout attempts to the north and the capture of larger groups of Ukrainian soldiers demonstrated this.

“Especially the members of the Azov regiment continue to fight to the bitter end. They expect certain death if they are captured because they are considered ‘Nazis’ from a Russian point of view. They therefore have no alternatives,” said the military analyst.
