Former South African president Jacob Zuma, who has been sentenced to prison for contempt of justice, is currently in Russia for “health reasons,” a spokesman said. However, the spokesperson stressed that the 81-year-old would return to his home country, where he would have to serve the remainder of his detention.
Zuma will return home “as soon as the doctors have completed their treatment”. The trip to Russia is by no means a secret. On Thursday, South Africa’s Constitutional Court upheld a ruling requiring Zuma to return to prison to serve the remainder of a 15-month sentence for contempt of justice. The country’s highest court has rejected an appeal seeking to prevent Zuma’s return to prison. South African prison authorities had granted Zuma’s parole.
Released on probation
After two months in prison, Zuma was paroled on medical grounds. However, an appeals court ruled in November 2022 that Zuma was unlawfully paroled. The court ordered his return to Estcourt detention center in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal – a decision that has now been upheld by the Constitutional Court.
Zuma belongs to a generation of anti-apartheid activists whose struggle was supported by the Soviet Union and who have political or personal ties to Moscow.
