As is known, the first official shooting of a wolf in Carinthia took place two weeks ago in the Gailtal. But now it turned out that the she-wolf had not killed any sheep at all.
The she-wolf’s DNA was compared to samples from all the animals killed, but there was no match. “The female wolf we killed was unknown to us,” Roman Kirnbauer, the state’s wolf officer, confirms in an interview with ORF. “It has not yet been proven in Carinthia or in Austria.”
Had to be chased out beforehand
Yet the animal was not completely harmless because it was located in a residential area and even had to be chased away twice. Once with a warning shot. Only then was it shot.
conditions were given
With this behavior, animals are considered risk wolves and are therefore also subject to the Carinthian wolf regulation, which speaks of “harmful wolves” and “risk wolves”. The former can be proven to have killed or injured 20 farm animals in one month. High-risk wolves approach humans and populated areas even after “deterrence” and can be shot if the animal reappears in the populated area. These conditions also applied in this case.
