The UK government has asked the police for help in housing prisoners due to overcrowded prisons. It concerns a maximum of 400 cells, said the responsible Secretary of State Damian Hinds in the British Parliament on Wednesday. The reason is an “acute and sudden” increase in the number of detainees in recent months. Hinds said it was the first time since 2007 that an emergency plan had been drawn up.
On the one hand, the “long-awaited” increase is due to additional measures in the fight against crime, according to the conservative politician. On the other hand, this is the result of a weeks-long strike by lawyers. In the meantime, more people were detained and after the end of the strike, the number of male prisoners in particular had increased sharply.
Release foreign prisoners as soon as possible
Also because, according to experts, judgments in Britain are becoming increasingly strict, the country’s prisons have long been considered overcrowded. Therefore, foreign prisoners in particular must be released and deported as soon as possible.
According to a report in the newspaper “Sun”, this arrangement could also benefit German ex-tennis star Boris Becker. The 54-year-old was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for hiding assets worth millions from his trustees.
