Despite Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, France continues to extract nuclear material from Russia. The last delivery arrived in Dunkirk in northern France on Tuesday, nuclear technology company Framatome confirmed on Wednesday.
It concerned a supply of material for the Framatome plant in Romans for the production of nuclear fuel for customers, in particular for the French nuclear power plant. According to the environmental organization Greenpeace, the containers and drums containing natural uranium and enriched uranium were transported by rail and truck.
Greenpeace also suspected the Framatome site in Lingen, Emsland, as a possible target, but the company did not confirm this. Investigative news portal Mediapart photographed the loading in Dunkirk harbor (see tweet above).
Greenpeace: “Nuclear cooperation must stop”
Despite the French government’s recent decision to order energy group EDF and nuclear company Orano to stop exporting uranium for reprocessing to Russia, nuclear trade between France and Russia is still going well, said Greenpeace nuclear expert Pauline Boyer. Given the war in Ukraine, this is outrageous and nuclear cooperation with Russia must be completely stopped.
As EDF informed the Mediapart portal, the group ensures that no contractual relationship with Russia violates international sanctions. “The decision to continue certain relationships is made in particular with due regard for international sanctions and the need not to compromise nuclear safety.”
