South Korea issues arrest warrants for four police officers over Halloween tragedy

It is the first time such a decision has been made as part of the investigation into the incident, which killed nearly 160 people.

South Korean authorities on Thursday issued arrest warrants for four other police officers as part of the investigation into the October 29 tragedy that killed nearly 160 people in Seoul’s Itaewon district.

The four officers have been identified as Lee Im Jae, former chief of Yongsan Police Station in Itaewon; Park Sung Min, a former senior intelligence officer; Kim Jin Ho, former intelligence agent in Yongsan; and Song Byung Joo, a former senior aid worker.

This is the first time arrest warrants have been sought as part of the special investigation into the Halloween tragedy that has rocked the country. Lee, for his part, is accused of arriving too late – about 50 minutes after the first warnings – according to information from the Yonhap news agency.

He is also accused of not taking the relevant measures to get the large capacity under control after the first calls from the emergency services. In contrast, the team investigating what happened has indicated that Park ordered an intelligence report suppressed given the warnings it gathered about security for the Halloween festivities.

He is the most senior police officer of the nearly twenty officers who are being investigated following the incident. Kim, for his part, has been accused of asking his subordinates to remove the report in question.
