Russia’s current attacks on Ukraine apparently continue to target the country’s already severely damaged energy supply. The recently recaptured city of Kherson has now been cut off from the power grid after another bombshell. This was confirmed by the regional governor there.
Electricity was restored to the city last week after it was recaptured by Ukrainian troops in early November after several months of Russian occupation.
Attacks by Russia are responsible for Kherson being cut off from power, Governor Yaroslav Yanushevich wrote on Telegram. Work is underway to resolve the issue.
Energy as part of military doctrine
According to the British assessment, the massive Russian missile strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure are part of a new pillar of Russian military doctrine. It is likely the first time Russia has attempted to implement its draft strategic mission to destroy critical targets, the defense ministry said in London on Thursday, citing intelligence findings.
To this end, long-range missiles would be used against critical infrastructure to demoralize the population and force the government to capitulate.
Its effectiveness has declined recently
“Russian strikes continue to cause power outages and cause indiscriminate, widespread humanitarian suffering across Ukraine,” it said in London. However, its effectiveness has already diminished, as Russia has already deployed a large portion of its capable missiles against tactical targets.
In addition, the psychological effect is significantly lower than if the tactic had been used at the beginning of the war, the ministry said in reference to the months-long defensive fighting by Ukrainian troops.
