British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wants to crack down on radical protests by climate activists. “Whoever breaks the law should feel its full force,” Sunak said Thursday after meeting with police officers about how to deal with roadblocks and other illegal forms of protest. In Great Britain, the group “Just Stop Oil” has recently attracted attention. They are also responsible for the tomato soup in a Van Gogh painting in London.
“It is totally unacceptable that the daily lives of ordinary citizens are disrupted by a selfish minority,” Sunak said. The police has its full support to act decisively against such protests. The Ministry of the Interior had previously announced stricter measures. Some climate activists have already been sentenced to prison terms.
Stop demanded for new fossil projects
The activists of “Just Stop Oil” demand – as the name suggests – the exit from fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas. They specifically demand that the British government stop issuing permits for new fossil fuel projects. Sunak did not comment on this.
The UK has recently issued new permits for oil and gas fields in the North Sea. According to climate researchers, this goes against the plan to be climate neutral by 2050.
