Migrants continue to try to cross the border fence of the Spanish enclave of Melilla in North Africa. One did so in a particularly spectacular way: he flew across the heavily guarded border in a paraglider. Witnesses captured the moment on camera (see above).
The two men were riding past the border fence just as the migrant paraglider flew over the barrier – and came down rough. The occupants filmed from the car and marveled at the daring action. “Brother, there’s a damn paraglider landing!” and “He had a hard landing” can be heard in Spanish in the short clip.
Migrant not found
Shortly afterwards, the two informed the Spanish Guardia Civil. Local authorities in Melilla confirmed the incident on Thursday. Civil Guard patrols immediately went to the scene, but were unable to locate the migrant. The person’s nationality could not be determined.
It is the first time that someone has paraglided over the border fence in Melilla, local newspaper El Faro de Melilla reports. The equipment for this is therefore easy to obtain: a paraglider is already available on the internet from 6.45 euros.
Boundary fences from six to ten meters high
Like Ceuta in North Africa, the Spanish enclave of Melilla is a regular destination for those hoping for a better life in Europe. The borders are heavily guarded and blocked by two parallel barbed wire fences six to ten meters high.
In recent years, thousands of migrants have tried to cross the 12km border to Melilla or the 8km border to Ceuta by climbing fences, swimming or hiding in cars.
