Greenpeace films tube – Destroyed explosion near Nord Stream 1?

Date:

The environmental organization Greenpeace used a diving robot to take pictures of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline destroyed by an explosion. According to the footage available to the German television station SWR and also published on YouTube by Greenpeace (video above), the tube was probably destroyed by a powerful explosion nearby.

The footage was shot of one of the four leaks in the two Nord Stream pipelines, which lie in the Swedish economic zone off the island of Bornholm. They were taken with the help of a diving robot at a depth of almost 80 meters, show, among other things, a broken and compressed pipe (photo below) and may provide evidence of targeted sabotage.

Damage to the seabed documented
During the expedition with the ship MV Beluga II, Greenpeace is investigating the consequences of the major explosions at the two Nord Stream pipelines at the end of September and the resulting methane gas escape for flora and fauna in the Baltic Sea. They took water and soil samples around the Nord Stream 1 explosion site, documented the damage to the seabed with a diving robot and placed a flag with the peace sign there (photo below).

As thousands upon thousands of tons of old munitions and chemical warfare agents from World War I and II were dumped in the area where the explosions occurred, Greenpeace fears the blasts could have fueled highly toxic contaminated sites. The analyzes of the 40 samples, which are being evaluated at the Toxicological Institute of the University of Kiel, must now show whether this was actually the case. The SWR reported that results can be expected in two weeks at the earliest.

According to explosives expert Fritz Pfeiffer, who did analyzes for Greenpeace, Nord Stream 1 may have been damaged by an explosion nearby. According to the SWR, he estimates that 200 to 400 kilograms of explosives were probably detonated there.

Four leaks discovered almost simultaneously
Russia had been pumping gas from Siberia to Germany and other European countries through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline until the supply freeze. Nord Stream 2 was never used due to the Russian attack on Ukraine. In September, four leaks in the pipes were discovered almost simultaneously and sabotage was suspected. Russia denies responsibility. An official perpetrator has not yet been named.

Greenpeace justified the expedition with the fact that even months after the explosion of the two parallel natural gas pipelines between Russia and Germany, little is known about cause and effect. The organization is mainly concerned with the consequences for the environment.
