On Saturday, January 25, not only the Opera Redoute will take place, but also the Graz Academic Ball. A demonstration of the “offensive against the right” has already been registered – a larger police operation in the city center is expected.
This Saturday the 70th Academic Ball will take place in Graz, and demonstrations will take place there again. Because the event, which traditionally brings together the members of the fraternity, is a thorn in the side of many. “Given the threat of a blue-black government, it is even more important to take to the streets against the academic ball! “German nationalist, right-wing extremist brotherhoods meet in the conference boxes to celebrate themselves and their racist, anti-queer worldview and to network,” writes the Styrian “Offensive against the Right.”
Academic ball under special auspices
This year, due to the blue shift at the state and federal level, more demonstrators than usual could be brought to the streets – most recently the number of participants has typically been a few hundred. Officially, the demo entitled “Bringing rights out of sync” is the only meeting reported so far – the number of participants has not yet been announced. It starts at 4:30 PM on Mariahilferplatz, the Academic Ball doesn’t open until 8:30 PM.
In any case, greater crowds can be expected in the city center of Graz, and the police are also preparing for this. At the same time, Opera Redoubt takes place under a completely different motto. In front of the opera house you can probably expect people in evening dresses. Further demonstrations can be registered up to 48 hours in advance.
