The Colombian government and National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas have reached a commitment to facilitate the return of Embera communities forcibly displaced, in an agreement President Gustavo Petro requested this Saturday to expand to more Colombian areas.

During his participation in the Meeting of Leaders of Western Antioquia, the President explained that “the first point of agreement with the ELN is that the return of populations displaced by that organization from the indigenous areas of Embera to their reservations is allowed, with the guarantee of non-recurrence and return”.

One such example is the municipality of Murindó, in the department Antiochwhich continues to be the victim of violence: “Murindó has returned to a dying municipality, and we cannot allow that,” complained Petro, who has indicated that it is a city “of ethnic majorities: indigenous and Afro-descendants” and has asked for more actions so that people can live in peace in the areas.

Petro has advocated in this way for a “stop of the hostility to the population in Murindó” so that the population can “live in peace”.

Referring to the Embera people, the president has stressed that they have been victims of the violence of the conflict at the hands of various actors who have taken away “the peace of mind of living in their territory”. the first agreement reached in Caracas in the new round of peace talks, the first cycle of which has been completed.

However, it has considered that “this must be apply to other populations. In other words, the return must be possible throughout the national territory for every ethnic group of the population.”
