Lava in the sea – Stromboli volcano rumbles: Earthquakes are also reported

Date:

A volcanic eruption on the Italian Mediterranean island of Stromboli on Sunday caused a natural spectacle. In the afternoon, a lava flow gushed out of the crater of the volcano of the same name north of Sicily and made its way down the valley to the sea, according to a statement from the Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).

An amateur video showed thick smoke rising from where the glowing lava poured into the sea. There was no word yet on damage or injuries on Sunday evening. As a precaution, however, about thirty civilians had to leave their homes.

tsunami wave
As a result of the volcanic eruption and the lava masses that fell into the sea, a tsunami wave about five feet high developed. Alarm bells rang on the island. However, according to head of civil protection Fabrizio Curcio, there was no major damage.

4.6 magnitude earthquake reported: epicenter in the sea
Before that, an earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale was reported with an epicenter in the sea, three kilometers deep south of the island of Vulcano. Like Stromboli, the island belongs to the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily. A series of lower magnitude aftershocks followed. On Vulcano Island, there was minor damage to the hospital and some houses.

Like Mount Etna in Sicily, Stromboli is an active volcano. The almost 930 meters high Stromboli erupts very regularly and has already become a tourist attraction.
