The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, indicated this Sunday that the country’s authorities had arrested more than 140 gang members in less than two days, after announcing an operation involving 10,000 soldiers and police that evacuated the municipality of Soyapango. surrounded.

“The municipality of Soyapango, the most populous municipality in our country, has been completely fenced off since yesterday morning. In less than 48 hours, more than 140 gang members have been arrested inside the fence. Territorial control is already fully in the hands of the state,” he said in a message published on his profile on the social network Twitter.

The Presidency Office has added that some of the convicts are doing community service. “Detainees in the trust phase remove graffiti that refer to criminal structures,” he explains. “We are not only taking them off the streets, we are also taking away their sense of belonging to our communities,” the presidential office added.

Bukele announced on Saturday that the aforementioned municipality, attached to the country’s capital, was “completely closed” due to the deployment of thousands of security forces to end the threat of gangs in the territory.

“8,500 soldiers and 1,500 officers have surrounded the city, while police and army extraction teams are in charge of removing, one by one, all of the gang members that are still there,” the president said.

The leader declared a state of emergency in late March – when the country recorded up to 62 murders in just one day – which has been extended in recent months and has seen more than 50,000 suspected gang members arrested.

“Ordinary citizens have nothing to fear and can continue to live their lives. This is an operation against criminals, not honest citizens,” the Salvadoran leader added.
