Starting Thursday, carrying firearms will be banned in Times Square and many other public places in New York. During a news conference on Wednesday, Mayor Eric Adams unveiled a sign that reads “Times Square: Gun-Free Zone” to be hung on Thursday in and around the square in the heart of Manhattan, which is visited by about 50 million people annually.
In democratically governed New York City and New York State, a law comes into effect around the turn of the month, which the City and State of New York passed over the summer. This was in response to a June Supreme Court ruling that upheld the constitutional right of American citizens to leave their homes armed.
“The Supreme Court decision was a shot that reverberated around the world, targeting the safety of New Yorkers,” said Adams, a former Democratic Party police officer and politician. Adams had described the fight against gun violence as a major goal of his tenure as mayor.
New York governor Kathy Hochul said guns are also banned in “bars, libraries, schools, government offices and hospitals.” Hidden carrying of weapons is also prohibited. New York state will “continue to lead the way and enforce sensible gun violence laws,” Hochul said.
