“Build redundancies” – G7 countries want better protection for submarine internet cables

Date:

The seven leading Western industrialized countries (G7) want to improve the safety of data cables on the seabed. To this end, cooperation within the G7 group itself and with like-minded partners will be deepened, according to the closing statement of the meeting of digital ministers, which took place in the Japanese city of Takasaki until Sunday. Japan currently chairs the group of states.

After the explosions on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines off the Danish island of Bornholm, there are fears in the West that important communication links could also become the target of a conflict. The authorities assume sabotage at Nord Stream. It is still unclear who is responsible for this.

According to the ideas of the G7 countries and the EU, multi-layered networks should be maintained for the security of the data links, including terrestrial, marine and radio links, as stated in the statement. It is also important that the different networks are compatible, so that you can switch to other routes in an emergency. “As the main traffic arteries for the global internet, submarine cables must be better secured and redundancy must be provided,” said German Digital Affairs Minister Volker Wissing.

Closer cooperation with the US
In general, the G7 countries of Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Canada and the US want to cooperate more closely on digital issues. This also applies to artificial intelligence, which is covering more and more areas of business and life. The final statement spoke of opportunities and challenges in this regard. Future conversations could therefore be about rules for AI. This can affect copyright and disinformation spread from abroad.

“We in the G7 agree that we need to move quickly when it comes to regulating AI,” Wissing said, according to the statement. Generative AI – including text robots like ChatGPT – has enormous potential to increase productivity and improve lives. You can help find solutions to complex problems, for example in medicine or climate protection. “It is all the more important that we as democrats lead the way and guide development with smart rules that protect us from abuse and manipulation.”
