In Afghanistan, two people were publicly flogged for suspected homosexual acts.
The Supreme Court of the ruling Islamist Taliban announced on Wednesday that the two people in the northern province of Sar-i Pul had been sentenced to a total of 52 lashes.
Earlier this month, a court in the same province flogged a total of 63 men and women. Some of the convicts were also accused of homosexual acts.
The Supreme Court also announced on Wednesday the public flogging of a person accused of “moral crimes” in Afghanistan’s eastern Paktia province. The convicted person must also serve a year in prison. In the eastern province of Paktika, the victim’s family has now been forgiven for a murder.
Executions and floggings
The Taliban reintroduced public punishments, including executions and flogging for crimes such as murder, theft and adultery, after returning to Afghanistan in August 2021, despite criticism from human rights groups and the United Nations. Since then, five men convicted of murder have been publicly executed.
Complete introduction to Sharia law
Last March, the Taliban’s supreme leader, Haibatullah Achundsada, promised the full implementation of Sharia law in Afghanistan. In an audio message, he specifically mentioned punishments for adultery, such as stoning and public flogging.
