Investigators from the State Criminal Investigation Service of Upper Austria have solved large-scale car thefts. A 42-year-old and a 36-year-old Czech are said to have committed 20 burglaries and car thefts in Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Salzburg with a total damage of 230,000 euros.
The two Czechs were arrested and largely confessed. On the night of April 7, they would have broken into a car company in the Wels Land district and, in addition to tools and IT parts, stole two cars worth 80,000 euros. After the break-in, the perpetrators drove to Steyr in a luxury car, stole three bicycles worth around 14,000 euros from a bicycle shop, loaded them into the stolen cars and fled with them to the Czech Republic. One of the men attracted the attention of the police because he was driving so fast on the western motorway towards Vienna that he could not be stopped.
The next day, the two Czechs wanted to steal a parked car with a key stolen during the break-in on April 7. When officers stopped them, they tried to escape. They injured a police officer and damaged a police car. An accomplice is still under investigation.
Connection with the Polish gang
By April, Upper Austria police had already cleared up a series of luxury car thefts in Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Styria, committed by four Poles aged 26 to 37. There must be a connection between the two groups of perpetrators or series of thefts. Thanks to good cooperation with the Czech authorities, it was possible to find, secure and return the two stolen cars in the Wels-Land district.
