After the devastating storm hit the southern Italian island of Ischia in the Gulf of Naples on November 26, authorities continued rescue work on Tuesday and found the last missing person dead. The body was discovered near a parking lot where much of the earth had landed in the Casamicciola part of the island. The official death toll has risen to twelve.
The last victim found is a 31-year-old woman who worked as a waitress. She probably got caught in the landslide while driving to work.
Millions for emergency aid
The Council of Ministers in Rome decided on Thursday to take preventive measures against natural disasters such as floods and landslides. For geological safety, 350 million euros will be made available for 139 projects.
There is a risk of flooding, landslides and erosion in almost all of Italy and not just on Ischia with its population of just over 60,000. 94 percent of communities are at risk, Italian civil protection chief Fabrizio Curcio said. That is why more prevention is needed and people should also adjust their behavior in the event of severe weather warnings.
