Porca misery! In some pizzerias in the Linz area there was no pizza, spaghetti or lasagna and tiramisu for dessert on Tuesday – instead 150 police officers in balaclavas and with drug detection dogs marched on. The guests had to give way, after which the law enforcement officers meticulously searched the building.
The Federal Criminal Investigation Department (BK), with the support of the LKA Upper Austria and the Cyber Crime Competence Center (C4), struck simultaneously at 14 different locations after extensive investigations. The apartments, offices, shops and premises were searched on the basis of a European investigation order. The public prosecutor’s office in Catanzaro in Calabria (southern Italy) had asked the public prosecutor’s offices in Linz and Steyr for help.
50 billion euros annual turnover
In essence, it is primarily about a suspect who, according to the Italian authorities, is said to be the governor of the notorious “‘Ndrangheta” in Austria and also in southern Bavaria and who committed crimes. These Calabrian “families” are considered the most powerful mafia organization in Europe. In 2021, their annual turnover is estimated at 50 billion euros. The main sources of income are drug trafficking and illegal waste processing.
The suspect was already in court
But who is the suspect? It is said to be a Linz celebrity with Calabrian roots, who was already in court in Linz in autumn 2020 for selling 200 grams of cocaine, likes to drive around in a striking Italian luxury car and has a deliberately affable attitude.
