During the renovation of the waste dump in the district of Steyr-Hausleiten (Upper Austria), construction workers came across eight graves from the early Middle Ages. A team of archaeologists has now uncovered the bones of seven people, in addition to numerous grave goods such as glass and bronze jewelry.
Including the skeleton of a young woman, the municipality announced in a broadcast on Wednesday. The woman – named Viktoria by the excavation team – apparently lived around AD 700, was about 5 feet 8 inches tall, muscular and died around the age of 30. “We know very little from that time. However, there would have been a settlement in or near Steyr at that time,” explains Wolfgang Klimesch, the archaeologist in charge of the study.
Hope for new insights
Many new insights are expected from the finds. Victoria’s remains will initially be stored in the depot of the Stedelijk Museum for further research and the grave goods will be preserved for the exhibition.
