In Germany, a blow to the so-called Reichsbürger succeeded on Wednesday – they reject legitimate state authority and justify it with conspiracy myths. During the big raid there were also arrests in Austria. In terms of anti-state connections, there is a “strong scene” in Germany, as Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of the State Security and Intelligence Directorate (DSN), stressed on Wednesday. He also warned of Islamist threats that were “ready for attack”.
During the raid by the German authorities on Wednesday morning, 25 people were arrested – suspects were also arrested in several Austrian states. However, Haijawi-Pirchner gave no details, the communication is the responsibility of the German authorities.
Already radicalized children under the age of 15
On Wednesday, the DNS boss also warned journalists against threats “in the high double digits” from the radical Islamic and right-wing extremist environment. These would basically be “ready for attack”. There is currently no concrete threat scenario, but a new risk assessment has been released for Advent markets, “which will be effective for the police,” said Haijawi-Pirchner of the interior ministry. As far as radicalized Islamists are concerned, they mainly gather in small groups on the internet. According to the DNS leader, these include “children aged 13, 14 who are already largely radicalized”. There are about ten young people under the age of 15 here, “who are a big challenge,” says Haijawi-Pirchner.
A not inconsiderable number of offenders are in prison or have only recently been released from prison. Observing or monitoring them is anything but easy for human, criminal and technical reasons. So far, the DSN has held 28 case discussions with judicial authorities on known individuals before their release from prison – many of them still considered dangerous and preoccupying state guards.
Climate activists are being watched
“There is also increasing radicalization in the field of climate activists,” the DSN boss explained to journalists. These must also be complied with, because attacks on vital infrastructure cannot be ruled out. At the moment, however, there are no concrete indications of planned actions.
The conversation took place on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the DNS, which replaced the recently controversial Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Fight against Terrorism (BVT). A “consistent reform process” is currently underway, as the director-general for public security, Franz Ruf, stressed. A “clear and organizational separation of state security and intelligence services” was achieved. In the past year, 1,300 research files were created and 1,200 tips received from the extremism hotline were processed. “Internationally, we have gained a lot of trust with a lot of effort,” says Ruf.
1.7 oligarchs frozen billions
As part of the international sanctions against Russia after the attack on Ukraine, assets in Austria were also frozen. At 1.7 billion euros, “a very good value”, as Ruf noted. This concerns no less than twelve percent of the EUR 14 billion that has been tracked down and frozen in Europe so far. According to Haijawi-Pirchner, Russian oligarchs in Austria were hit “in the single digits”. 90 percent of the assets included were bank accounts or cash, with the rest related to real estate and transportation.
