“Freeze War” – NATO expects a Russian offensive in the spring

Date:

The defense alliance NATO expects a Russian offensive in Ukraine in the spring. “Russia is trying to freeze this war, at least for a short time (…) and then launch a major offensive in the spring,” Alliance secretary general Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday at an event hosted by the “Financial Times” in Brussels.

According to information from NATO, the Kremlin wants to use the winter to regroup its troops and repair weapons, Stoltenberg said. Regarding the alleged Ukrainian drone strikes in Russia, he said the military alliance had no further information. Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the matter with his country’s Security Council on Tuesday. Ukraine denies the attacks.

Alliance wants to continue to support Ukraine
NATO’s secretary general said member states will continue their “unprecedented” support to Ukraine. But the systems or weapons that have already been delivered must also be “actually ready for use,” he stressed. “This requires a large amount of new ammunition and maintenance work.”

According to British intelligence, Russia apparently continues to expand its defense positions in Ukraine. Accordingly, some decision makers would be concerned about a possible Ukrainian attack. The move could also play into the hands of Kremlin propaganda.
