Date:

The conservatives take over the mayors of Palermo, Genoa and L’Aquila thanks to the good result of the Brothers of Italy, who lead the League within the conservative bloc

The centre-right candidates won in Palermo, Genoa and L’Aquila, three of the four regional capitals at stake in the municipal elections held this Sunday in nearly a thousand Italian municipalities, in which nine million people had to participate. only started this Monday afternoon.

According to the first estimates of the vote, we will instead have to wait until the second round, which takes place in two weeks, to find out who are the new mayors of Catanzaro, Verona and Parma, other key cities where the vote was taken, as no single candidate obtained 50% of the required votes. At the same time, a referendum on justice reform was held across the country, resulting in a turnout of less than 21%, the lowest turnout in Italian democratic history and 30 points below the minimum quorum for the referendum to pass.

The outcome of the municipal elections has been carefully analyzed by the parties, who see it as a preview of the general elections that will take place in the first months of next year and which will end the experience of the government of Mario Draghi, supported by a heterogeneous coalition composed of nine political forces. One of them is the League, whose leader, Matteo Salvini, defended that “when the center-right is united, it wins” and claimed his party’s role as “glue” in the conservative bloc, which also included Forza Italia, Silvio Berlusconi’s electoral being, and the Brothers of Italy (HdI).

The latter force, considered the far-right and led by Giorgia Meloni, is the emerging acronym in Italian politics and is forecast to outperform the League in municipal elections. Thanks to the revenue generated by remaining the sole parliamentary opposition to the Draghi government, HDI is today the first party in the country and is said to win 22% of the nationwide vote according to the latest polls.

The municipal also provided favorable ground to test the alliance between the Democratic Party (PD), the main center-left formation, and the Five Star Movement (M5E), an initial anti-system political force that, although it won the last general election, held in 2018 is currently facing a deep crisis. “The results encourage the line set by the PD. Wherever progressive forces have converged, results have been achieved,” said Walter Verini, member of the PD secretariat.

The leader of this political force, Enrico Letta, hopes to forge an alliance ahead of next year’s general election, which will see, in addition to the M5E, two small centrist parties such as Azione and Italia Viva, the electoral brand of the former prime minister. to join, Minister Matteo Renzi.

In these courtship movements, which will characterize Italian politics in the coming months, the electoral law by which the elections will be held will be decisive, as it will have to be reformed. The ultimate will of the HDI and the PD, the only two political forces with more than 20% voting intent today, will depend on the system chosen, to lead each of their respective ideological blocs or choose the smaller parties instead to vote for your account to the next appointment with the polls.
