Meter-high flames shot out of the windows of an apartment in the Brigittenau district of Vienna late on Thursday evening. The resident was able to get to safety in time, as were other people who fled outside. However, a man with a child and an elderly woman did not escape in time. Firefighters came to their aid.
The fire broke out on the first floor of a residential building near Mortaraplatz around 11:45 PM. As Lukas Schauer of the Vienna Professional Fire Service reported, flames sprang two meters high from two side windows on the street side when they arrived on the scene. The stairwell above the fire apartment was already heavily smoked.
Several residents, including those in the fire apartment, were able to escape, while three others, a man with a child and an elderly woman had to be taken to safety via the stairs with escape filter masks, Schauer continued.
One victim taken to hospital
While the emergency services of the Vienna professional rescue service attended to the victims – a man had to be taken to hospital as a result, it was said – 39 firefighters fought the flames. “Thanks to the extensive extinguishing operation, the fire was quickly extinguished,” said the spokesman. As a result, the stairwell and the fire apartment have been made smoke-free. The operation was over in just over two hours.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Vienna State Police is investigating.
