Students and teachers from the Bruck education cluster with a trade academy, a trade school and the Federal Institute for Primary Education were extremely lucky: on Thursday evening the entire ceiling of a classroom collapsed. The cause is unclear and the school will remain closed until further notice.
On Thursday night, the accident took place in the Bruck education cluster B3 (the trade academy, the trade school and the Federal Institute for Primary Education are housed here): for reasons that are still unclear, the entire substructure of a ceiling in a classroom on the second floor of the HAK came loose.
I can’t imagine what would have happened if this had happened during the day! The Styrian education directorate says: “As a precaution, the entire B3 Bruck building is closed until further notice. It is not foreseeable that the closure will be lifted without structural safety measures.”
The mayor is concerned
“I am deeply saddened and fortunately no one was injured, but this incident could have had fatal consequences. My top priority now is the safety of the students and all teaching staff. I immediately got an idea on the spot and am in close contact with the federal real estate company BIG and the Directorate of Education. “Together with my employees, I am trying to provide temporary replacement housing,” Mayor Andrea Winkelmeier told “Krone”.
The incident is also becoming an issue at the federal level
The dangerous incident also becomes a problem at parliamentary level, the FPÖ takes Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) to task: “The Minister of Education will have to explain to us in an investigation whether there is a general security risk due to the condition of the building and what measures will be taken be taken to correct the obvious structural defects. The necessary resources must be made available immediately by the federal government – after all, there is undoubtedly a risk of delay,” said Hannes Amesbauer, member of the National Council. The PVV would also like to know “to what extent known structural problems have not been taken sufficiently seriously by the ministry.”
Homeschooling until June 3
The damage to the building is significant. In order not to endanger anyone, homeschooling is initially planned until June 3. Until the end of school, all schools of the federal school community have alternative housing available on the HTL Kapfenberg grounds.
