It always pays to be careful: A couple who offered gold coins for sale on a sales platform was overtaken by scammers in Vienna on Wednesday. The allegedly interested parties turned out to be brutal criminals. By a happy coincidence, worse things could have been prevented.
The man and woman had offered eight gold coins on an internet platform, after which the three interested parties, 41, 44 and 48 years old, contacted us. The agreed purchase price was 5,000 euros and the meeting point would be early Wednesday evening in Donaustadt.
Officials fighting street crime became aware of the alleged prospects’ car – what happened inside the vehicle seemed suspicious to them.
Euro notes became dollar bills
So they kept an eye on the car. And witness the following scenes: When the money was handed over, the sellers were allowed to count the bills, but then the buyers offered to put the amount in an envelope. A common trick: because there they distracted the victims and replaced the 5,000 euros with a 100 euro bill and 46 one dollar bills.
That’s when the police intervened. The officials arrested the suspects despite fierce resistance, the executive said Friday. During the interrogation, the suspects admitted that they had traveled to Austria from Romania a few weeks ago to make money from this scam. According to their own statement, they have already been successful twice. They were taken to a detention center.
