United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said they mediated in the Griner case. The successful mediation efforts reflected the close friendly relations the two countries shared with the US and Russia, a joint statement said.
Griner and Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout each arrived in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, by private jet from Moscow and Washington, respectively.
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are traditional allies of the US, but they also work closely with Russia in the OPEC+ oil alliance. Both have also so far resisted Western pressure to isolate Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.
